2008 VOLUNTEERS
“To give without
any reward, or any notice, has a special quality of its own.”
Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Volunteer Information ~
Summer 2008
Volunteer commitment is an important part of every activity
at the Waldo County YMCA. Volunteers guide our organization as a part
of the Board of Directors. Volunteers help in every department, nearly
everyday.
Please consider becoming a volunteer.
The process is simple:
1. Fill out a volunteer application
2. Come in to the YMCA for a short interview
3. Have background and reference checks
4. Complete orientation as a volunteer in your particular area
We look forward to having new volunteers join our team. If you have questions,
speak to Julie at the YMCA.
Volunteer Opportunities ~
Summer 2008
Sewing Project
We are looking for a volunteer to cut and hem material to make
cloth napkins to use for the AOA luncheons and other YMCA events. We will
purchase the material. If you prefer to use a sewing machine that
is fine.

Teens
Dance Chaperones
The upcoming middle school dance this summer will be in August. We will
need chaperones for these dances. The exact date will be available as
soon as plans are finalized. The summer dances are held on Friday nights
from 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. If you are available for all of the
time or only part of the time for a dance, please volunteer to help.
General Activites
Coffee Helpers
If you come into the YMCA on a regular day each week and you would be
willing to make new pots of coffee whenever we run out during the hour
or two that you are here, we would be more than happy to teach you the
“ins and outs” of making coffee at the Y.
Volunteer Pool
At least three times each year we have a flyer that needs to be mailed
to all of our members. This requires many hours of sorting, folding, stapling,
tabbing and labeling. There are also other mailings and activities that
take place here at the YMCA. We need to be able to call on volunteer help
on those occasions.
As a volunteer you would be “on call” for these activities.
Watch for new opportunities coming soon....
Please consider becoming a volunteer. If any of the above opportunities
fit your schedule and area of interest, please fill out an application.
If you do not see an opportunity that suits you and you would like to
volunteer in an area that is not mentioned above, fill out an application
and indicate your interest.
Volunteer Opportunities
are not limited to those listed above.
If you have a particular skill or interest that you would like to share
with others, please come into the YMCA and fill out an application.
2007 Volunteer of the Year
Tim Woitowitz
Tim Woitowitz is a “been there, done that, kind of guy.” Tim
and his wife, Connie moved to Stockton Springs from upstate New York about
18 years ago and have been actively involved in this community since then.
Tim’s career experiences have given him the tools to make an easy
transition to becoming a treasured volunteer.
Tim volunteers his time in many places other than the YMCA. He has the
Mark and Tim Show on Bel TV; he runs a drug and alcohol program for youth
and adults, he helps support the Hospice program and he works with the
Restorative Justice program at the Waldo County Jail.
At the YMCA, Tim has taken on the leadership of the Youth Advocacy Program.
Once a week Tim works with 10-12 middle school and high school students
encouraging these teens to develop their self-esteem, as they advocate
for positive change in their schools and community. The group has worked
on a Kick Butts campaign; making their own video about the dangers of
smoking. At this time, the group is exploring healthy eating choices.
They are learning how to prepare food for their group from “scratch”
without the help of processed ingredients.
Here are a few things that the teens have to say about Tim. Bappa was
quoted as saying, “He is really, really awesome and rocks with his
music and everything else." Randy comes at it from a different angle
when he says, Tim is " the only old guy I know who can put up with
me". Alexandra comments that our man Tim is " a nice guy who
never has anything bad to say about anything". Gary says that he
thinks that "Tim has put a ton of time in and out of the YMCA helping
people" and Michael reiterates Bappa’s thoughts saying, "He
is awesome, he helps people and always makes sure people are under control."
Tim is unique in so many ways. His “do”, a white old school
mullet, is definitely one characteristic that distinguishes him from all
others. He has a smooth talk that can embarrass and flatter the recipient.
Cindy knows this only too well as we can all hear “Isn’t she
beautiful today? She’s just radiant.” Tim keeps everyone smiling
with his regular Tootsie Pop offerings. He engages kids and adults with
his amazing stories, but the single most important thing that sets Tim
apart from so many others is his genuine caring and interest in improving
the lives of others.
The Waldo County YMCA has benefited from the many hours that Tim has donated
to our community. Any organization would be happy to have a good volunteer
with Tim’s level of energy and enthusiasm working together with
them. We have been so fortunate to get to know him and appreciate him.
We are honored to have Tim Woitowtiz as our 2007 Waldo County YMCA Volunteer
of the Year.
